Malana Village – The Ancient Hidden World of Himachal

Malana is a mysterious and ancient village located in the Parvati Valley of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, India. Nestled at an altitude of about 2,652 meters (8,701 ft), it is one of the most isolated and unique villages in India.

🌟 Key Highlights of Malana:

🧬 1. Unique Ancestry

  • The people of Malana, called Malanis, believe they are descendants of Alexander the Great’s soldiers who settled there around 326 BCE.
  • They speak a rare language called Kanashi, which is not spoken or understood anywhere else.

⚖️ 2. Ancient Self-Governance

  • Malana follows its own traditional governance system, known as the Malana Council, which functions independently of Indian law.
  • The village operates by the rules of their deity, Jamlu Rishi, and decisions are taken through an old judicial system.

🚫 3. Isolation from Outsiders

  • Malanis consider themselves superior and pure, so outsiders (including Indians) are not allowed to touch them or their belongings.
  • Visitors must walk on designated paths and are discouraged from physical contact with locals.

🍁 4. Famous for Malana Cream

  • Malana is globally known for producing Malana Cream, a highly potent and aromatic type of hashish made from locally grown cannabis.
  • Though cannabis cultivation is illegal, the area has seen extensive production due to its climate and traditional knowledge.

🏞️ 5. Trekking and Beauty

  • The village is accessible via a scenic and moderate trek from Jari or Kasol.
  • Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and pine forests, it offers stunning natural beauty and peaceful vibes.
-The ideal time to visit Malana is from May to October when the weather is pleasant, and the trekking routes are accessible. During winter, heavy
snowfall can make the village difficult to reach.
